How can I tell the difference between numbers and letters?
Hey there workers! We wanted to post quickly about something that we found to be a bit hard, hoping that it could help you too!
You may have seen HITs with images that look like theses:
The Special Instructions say: Copy the 6 character code. Codes usually alternate number, letter, number, letter, number, letter. Example Include: 1T2C4O (Five character is a “5” not an “S” and the last is an “O” and not a zero)…
The nice thing about these source codes is that they are normally typed and not hand written. However, sometimes it can be hard to tell the difference: what is a number and what is a letter?!
For these HITs, it is important to look a little more closely at each digit in the code. The answer you seek lies within the special instructions. If you aren’t sure if the next character in the code is a letter or a number, refer to the order listed above.
How to tell the difference between 0O0O0O?
As I follow along with the special instructions I know that the last character is going to be a letter. The character also appears to be move of a circle than an oval. This code is “1W6L4O” NOT “1W6L40”.
Same goes for this HIT, the third character should be a number and has a slash through it indicating that it is a zero. This code is “1U0U9Z”.
How to tell the difference between 5S5S5S?
The letter “S” vs. the number “5” can be a slippery slope of sloppy. An “S” is more circular at the top and a “5” is more square at the top.
For this code we are focused on the last character which in this case would be a letter making this one “S”. It is not the number “5” because the top is more circular. This code is “2E7H4S”.
Following the pattern the second to last character is going to be a number. The top part of this character looks more like a square, therefore it is a number “5”. This code is “1W6L5K”.
How to tell the difference between lIlIlI?
Hands down this has to be by far the hardest, but I know that you all can get it. The letter “L” is only going to be shown as a capital for these HITs, and anything that looks like “I” will always be a capital letter “i”. The order given in the special instructions is also a helpful indicator.
In this case, the third character is going to be a letter and we can see that is in an “L”. This code is “1W6L7K”.
To decipher this code to start I know the last character is going to be a letter. The letter “L” is only going to be seen as a capital and not a lowercase “l”. Therefore, this is going to be a capital letter “I”. This code is “1K9H3I”.
Phew! That was a big one! As always, we appreciate everything you do for us 🙂 Please reach out with an email if any of this is unclear or you want a bit more help deciphering other HITs. We ❤️ hearing from you.
